NORTHERN MICHIGAN: STORM SAFETY TIPS FOR PROPANE USERS
Power out? Storm still rolling in? Stay prepared by forming an emergency plan. If you heat your home or run a generator with propane, here are the most important things to do right now:
USE GENERATORS SAFELY
Never run portable generators indoors or in garages
Keep at least 10 ft from your home
Run them in cycles to save fuel
BE SAFE WITH YOUR FIREPLACE
Keep rooms ventilated to prevent carbon monoxide buildup
Avoid lighting your fireplace during active lightning storms
Test your carbon monoxide detectors regularly
CHECK YOUR PROPANE SYSTEM
If you smell gas (rotten egg odor), leave immediately and call 911
Don’t relight anything until it’s been inspected
Make sure snow/ice isn’t blocking your tank or vents
